English Club – Learning About South Africa!

During English Club, students had the opportunity to learn more about South Africa and some of the differences between South Africa and Taiwan.

Students were amazed to discover that Taiwan is about 30 times smaller than South Africa, and that South Africa has 11 official languages! This led to a fun language game where students shared English words they knew, and Teacher Joe translated them into Afrikaans, one of the languages spoken in South Africa. The activity brought lots of laughter, excitement, and curiosity.

Students were also surprised to learn that many schools in South Africa run only from 7:40–13:40, after which students go home or take part in hobbies and activities. Homework is then completed at home as part of the student’s own responsibility.

The class also explored some popular South African foods and traditions, especially the famous BBQ, or “braai,” as it is called in South Africa. Students enjoyed learning that South Africans often have a braai no matter what day of the week it is!

Teacher Joe enjoyed sharing stories about his home country and answering the many thoughtful questions students had throughout the lesson.
